At the beginning of May I took PIDP 320 Evaluation of Learning course with Doug Mauger. My experience of evaluation in the education system was limited to the quizes, tests and exams I wrote in elementary and secondary school. Later on I had to pass welding tests that evaluated my welding skills and in the work place my performance is constantly being monitored and evaluated by my supervisors. In this course I learned that there is a science to evaluations and also artful ways they can be performed.
As the class went on we learned about alignment of our learning objectives with our instructional strategies and our assessments in order to achieve evaluations that are both valid in that they fairly test the knowledge or performance that we set out to evaluate and that they are reliable in that they will generate consistent results that show us the true abilities of our students.
We created Knowledge Assessment Instruments, Tables of Specifications, an Evaluation Plan, an Authentic Assessment Instrument, and we even found time to go to a coffee shop to give a presentation in a group on a Classroom Assessment Technique.
It was a hectic week that went by quickly but I really learned a lot about building in assessment techniques into my lesson plans and use them as learning experiences in of themselves. The textbooks Angelo, T. A., & Cross, K. P. (1993). Classroom assessment techniques and Fenwick, T. J., & Parsons, J. (2000). The Art of Evaluation: A Handbook for Educators and Trainers were great resources and I know I will be referring to them again and again.
I was really impressed with how this course builds on PDIP 3210 Curriculum Development and the process is very much hands on learning using lots of group work and student presentations. Doug Mauger was a very knowledgeable instructor and had a good grasp of the course material and was able to communicate it clearly to our class. I was able to complete all the assignments and submit them on time. It was a real relief. Onwards to PDIP 3250.
